Position Overview
The Automation & Controls Manager leads and develops a team of automation professionals, including Controls Engineers, PLC/HMI Programmers, and Technicians. This team is responsible for designing, building, and installing control systems and panels for industrial processing equipment, as well as developing PLC/HMI programs and reporting systems.
This role requires strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, vendors, and customers.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and manage automation team members, including hiring, performance management, and development.
- Provide training in control system design, component specification, panel fabrication, and installation practices.
- Allocate personnel to projects and coordinate subcontracted labor as needed.
- Ensure adherence to company policies, procedures, and safety standards.
Project & Technical Management
- Collaborate with project and engineering teams to define scope, timelines, and functional specifications.
- Review and approve control system designs for accuracy and compliance.
- Specify and procure automation components (e.g., PLCs, enclosures, instrumentation, cabling, and pneumatic systems).
- Oversee PLC/HMI programming progress and provide technical support.
- Manage electrical design timelines, including schematic development.
- Guide control panel layout, assembly, and wiring to ensure quality and compliance.
- Support on-call service programs and assist with field operations when needed.
- Troubleshoot electrical, controls, and mechanical issues on-site.
Sales & Business Support
- Provide technical input to support project proposals and scope development.
- Participate in customer meetings and presentations alongside sales teams.
- Assist in developing cost estimates and scopes of work.
- Identify opportunities for additional automation-related revenue.
Customer & Vendor Interaction
- Coordinate with vendors on component selection and technical issues.
- Interface directly with customers during installation, commissioning, and service.
- Maintain strong working relationships with internal teams and external partners.
Technical Qualifications
- Strong experience with PLC and HMI programming (Rockwell Automation experience preferred).
- Knowledge of electrical control systems (low-voltage DC and AC power systems).
- Familiarity with variable frequency drives and setup.
- Understanding of industrial Ethernet/networking for control systems.
- Ability to read and interpret instrumentation documentation and wiring diagrams.
- Proficiency with diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, signal generators).
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Travel Requirements
- Approximately 25% travel, including overnight trips within the U.S.
- Occasional international travel may be required; valid passport preferred.
Education & Experience
- Associate degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or related technical field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in PLC/HMI programming and commissioning.
- Experience with industrial instrumentation and control systems preferred.
- Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform job duties in office and industrial environments.
- Capable of standing, walking, climbing, bending, and lifting up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods as needed.
